The only health care facility of its kind in the Pittsburgh region that provides quality medical and dental care at no cost to individuals who do not have employer-sponsored health insurance, cannot afford private insurance, or who do not qualify for Medicaid or other types of assistance.
The Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center provides free, quality primary medical and dental services, with some specialty care, to uninsured individuals of greater Pittsburgh who meet our eligibility requirements.
We do not discriminate based on religious beliefs, race, gender, ethnicity, age, or physical disability.
We provide only health services. We are not a form of health insurance coverage.
We are not a walk-in clinic. Volunteer doctors and dentists are only available by scheduled appointment.
We do not treat children under the age of 19.
In Pennsylvania, children are covered by the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
You may qualify for care if you meet the following three criteria. Eligibility is reevaluated annually.
You have no coverage under any other health insurance plan for the service for which you are applying, AND
You have no coverage Medicaid, Medicare or other government supported programs for the services for which you are applying, AND AND
Your household income does not exceed 200% of the poverty level, based on Federal Poverty Guidelines. (see FPG chart)
Note: Some people with medical coverage may still be eligible for dental and/or vision services provided at the Free Health Care Center
All of our general dental services are provided by licensed dentists, hygienists and oral surgeons. Services include:
Exams and X-Rays
Selective Restorative Care
We do not have the facilities for a general anesthetic. Most teeth extractions are done by a group of oral surgeons that specialize in extracting teeth. They will use a local anesthetic to numb only the area of your mouth to be worked on.
Due to limited resources, we are unable to do any cosmetic dentistry such as teeth whitening. Our main goal is the restoration of good dental health.
All of our general medical services are provided by licensed physicians.
Primary Care Visits
Chronic Disease Management
Health Promotion and Education
Medical Therapy and Management
Nutrition and Diet Counseling
Ear, Nose and Throat
Psychiatry and Psychology
Note: For specialty care, only those physicians who are licensed in a particular specialty can provide such services. The Free Health Care Center physicians come to us as volunteers; therefore, we cannot always guarantee that a physician with a specialty license will be available.
Established as a "Volunteers in Medicine" (VIM) facility, the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center recruits volunteer medical and dental professionals to provide skilled and compassionate care to our patients. We also have many dedicated volunteers who help in non-clinical functions such as answering phone calls and assisting with applications for care. Our volunteers together with our staff care for patients according to the VIM "culture of caring" model that values how an individual is treated just as much as the treatment they receive.
The men and women who volunteer their time and talent at the Free Health Care Center are the cornerstone of our mission and the foundation of our success. Some are retired or semi-retired, while others are still working.
If you would like to join our team as a volunteer, you will see first hand the challenges that face the patients and the Health Care Center each day, and know that the role that you play provides much needed help and creates hope for so many in our community.
Our goal is to make your volunteer experience at the Free Health Care Center as rewarding as possible.
Your time commitment is up to you. We'll work with you to accommodate your schedule.
Free nearby parking will be provided.
Note: All clinical and non-clinical volunteers at the Free Health Care Center are required to submit for a Criminal Background Check and a Child Abuse Clearance.
Since this is a sliding fee scale clinic, we have provided the Federal Poverty Guidelines below. Visit the Catholic Charities Free Health Care Center website listed above to see what the level is needed for free care.
|Persons In Family Household||Poverty Guideline Salary per year|
For Households with more than 8 persons, add $4,480 for each additional person.
*Alaska and Hawaii have different rates for HUD federal poverty guidelines.
These numbers above represent 100% of the Federal Poverty Rate. In order to get reduced or free services from some clinics, they use a sliding fee scale based on your income. When they use a sliding fee scale, the 100% rate can be different than 100%. In those cases, using for example a 200% federal poverty level, you will only need double the 100% number listed above to 200%.
